The Grand Importance of Music

"Who wants to go first?" There was silence in the classroom; everyone was quiet. I was in English class; speech time was upon me. Our teacher had told us to write a 3 minute speech on a topic of our choice. Giving me so many options is usually a lot harder than it should be. "If no one volunteers, I'll have to pick someone." Still nobody spoke. "Alrightly then. Here it goes." Mrs.Tolkien stood from where he was sitting and went to his desk where he kept his class lists. We all watched him move his finger up and down the paper, suddenly stopping at a name. "Max, you're up" He announced and I took in a deep breath; that was me. I was up.

I stood up from my chair and walked up to the front of the room. I felt myself shaking already; public speaking is not my favorite part of English class. My heart was racing and I knew that my voice would come out shaky if I didn't calm myself down a little.

"Alright Max, whenever you're ready" Mr. Tolkien contiuned. He had taken his seat again and was now writing my name on the top of one of the grading papers; that just made my heart race faster. If I screwed up, I would lose marks. I take a deep breath and close my eyes, picturing a calming environment and I feel myself relax slightly. I open my eyes when I hear sir speak again, "What are you going to speak to us about Max?"

"The importance of music in my life" I replied with a smile. It was a relatively weak subject but a really personal one, it didn't help my nerves at all. I saw him nod, my queue to start speaking. "Music means many different things to everyone, Some people listen to it to escape from their lives and reality, some use it as a way to cope with traumatic events, and some just like the sounds. Different genres are also used for different reasons. Metal is most commonly used when someone is feeling angry or sad; Pop when the person is feeling energetic and happy; Country might be used when someone is going through relationship problems." I took a pause, all the while making eye contact. Everyone seemed to be paying attention which is always good when presenting. Mr. Tolkien was writing something down on his sheet, making me a little nervous.

"The beats in music varies with the different genres. Some have fast beats with heavy bases and drums; other have little base and more vocals and guitar. The beat of a song helps set its tone as well as the mood. Lyrics determine the subject that the song will be about. They also help to convey the tone/mood of the song." I took another breath and looked around, making sure to make eye contact with the whole room. "I use music to drown out reality and also people. When I need to escape the stress; whether it be from school work or social issues; I put my headphones and close my eyes. You see..." I started walking around in front of the class, "Music has a way of effecting the listeners mood. When I feel sad I usually listen to pop music to make myself feel better; although on occasion I will listen to some sad music." I smiled and stopped walking. "Music to me is both a way of escaping life and coping with it. Music can block everything out; it's especially good when you need to drown out the ramblings of a friend or family member. I know, we've all been there," I smiled.

"Music to me is a deep part of my life and I wouldn't know what to do if it wasn't. Thank you" I did a small bow, smiled and headed back to my seat as the whole class broke out in cheering and clapping.

"Thank you very much Max for that speech" was all Mr. Tolkien said as I sat back down.

Changing the World!

"Eve! You're up next! Right after Stacy" My mom yelled from across the room. I smiled, hoping not to give away how nervous I was. It was my first pageant ever and I was about to compete in the Questions round.

"Alright Mom! I'm ready!" I yelled back and got into position at the bottom of the stairs. I listened carefully for my introduction as I watched Stacy come off of the stage next to me. "How was it?" I asked.

"Not to bad. The questions are really simple. Like what do you want to be when you're older and stuff like that." She stopped at the bottom of the stairs; now standing next to me. "I'm sure you'll do great. You look absolutely beautiful," Stacy said with a smile.

"Thanks," I replied; that's when I heard my name. Putting on the best smile I could muster I strutted up on stage. The room is huge and it's packed full with people; mostly parents but some reporters for the local news stations.

"Eve, how are you feeling tonight?" The MC asked. I didn't recognize him from anywhere, which made me wonder if he was actually famous; MC's usually are.

"A little nervous but excited to answer some questions" I replied with a smile. I glanced at the audience, thinking it would help with my nerves, but it didn't so I just turned back to the MC.

"Understandable for your first pageant. But just between me and you, you're doing very well." He smiled and looked at his cards. I tried not to shuffle my feet back and forth while I waited for him to ask me the first question. "Eve, what do you aspire to be when you get older?"

I pondered the question over in my head. My future? I'd planned out many different ways to go about it. "I'm leaning towards police work. Helping people and making a difference are two things I always want to accomplish," I replied and smiled when it was met with a round of applause from the audience.

"Very good answer. Authority is a noble line of work. I hope to one day have you pull me over for speeding" He said and looked out at the audience; who laughed.

"Hopefully I won't have to" I replied, resulting in another fit of laughter from the audience. A new wave of confidence washed over me. Maybe I could win this, I thought.

"Anyways, final question. If there was one thing in the world you could change, what would it be?" The MC asked; and just like that, my confidence was gone. Change something about the world? There are so many possibilities; like world hunger, world peace and acceptance, along with equality.

"I'd have to say equality. Our society today is slowly making progress but there are still negative thoughts and things in the world" I replied. Everything had gone quiet. I looked at the MC who waved me on to continue. "Over the past decade more progress happens everyday of accepting everyone into society. Whether it be appearance wise or religion or sexual orientation or skin color or gender; progress is always happening." I paused for a quick break in my answer. "But negative acts are still happening. Abuse, adoption, rape, and beatings. If I could change one thing about the world, I would make everyone more accepting of one another." I stopped, hoping I hadn't said more than I was meant to. That of course was met with a standing ovation from all of the parents and a- clap on the back from the MC.

"Eve, that was a beautiful answer! Let's see if you can bring it in the talent round up next. Thank you" The MC said. I smiled brightly and walked off the stage. Apparently not everyone said stuff like that.

The Genetics Test

*Announcement through intercom*
The Genetics Test is one that has been performed throughout the ages. It is used in our world to find out a persons biological parent/s. The test itself if harmless but the results can be devastating.Today it is being executed on a one Tara Alcott. The two adults in question are Charlie Whales and Jessica Alcott. Both stand on either end of a hallway shaped-room; Tammy will sit in the middle. When ready we will activate the serum that will determine who Tammy's biological mother is, Charlie or Jessica. Tammy, please take a seat on the ground.

I'd heard about The Test before but never had I seen it performed let alone been apart of one. I took my place to the right of Tammy and stood as still as I could; a bunch of things ran through my head. What if she isn't mine? What if, somehow, Jessica managed to alter the results in her favor? I watched Tammy walk into the middle, she had her head held high and gave me a quick smile before facing forwards. She sat down cross legged on the floor; still facing the wall ahead of her.

*Announcement through intercom*
Stand by; activating serum.

It happened so quick. A blue light started to form beside Tammy. It grew and molded into a very realistic little girl. The little girl was about 9 years of age and had curly, neck length red hair; her natural hair color, my natural hair color. Her yellow eyes shone through the black as she glanced at both ends of the room, falling finally on Jessica.

"Mom?" The little girl questioned taking a small step towards her. I held by breathe, hoping and praying that the young Tammy ran to me. I watched Jessica nod and crouch low to the ground. At that, Tammy walked towards her, her arms stretched outwards, ready for a hug. However, just as she was about to her the other women the little girl turned quickly on her heels and faced me. I felt a smile appear on my face as the girl stood at the other end of the room looking puzzled.

"Charlie?" She whispered, luckily loud enough for me to hear it. I responded by sitting on the ground and crossing my legs. I laughed out loud, notnecessarily because of anything funny but out of happiness. I looked back at the young Tammy and held out my arms for a hug, the same as she had been doing only moments ago.

"It's me Tam" I replied. A smile crossed her face and she ran my way. I smiled even bigger at the irritated look on Jessica's face.

"MOM!" The 9 year old screamed, running right into my arms and I started to stand up never breaking my grip on her. I finally let go and the young Tammy stood by my side with a smile.

*Announcement over intercom*
Very Good, stand by for round 2. Activating serum

For some reason I wasn't expecting a round 2; I thought it was over. It didn't even click that there were two sides to Tammy, so when the wolf came out, I jumped a little.

Just after the intercom announcement came through a light, similar to the first, appeared next to Tammy. It was larger than the first and took longer to form. But when it did, it was breathtaking. An enormous wolf was now standing next to Tammy; its fur was a brickish sort of red with little bits of blonde shining through. Its giant head quickly turned towards Jessica and a startling sound emerged. I've been watching supernatural creatures like this before but I had never heard a sound as menacing as the sound that it made. It growled with such intensity and anger that it made goosebumps appear on my skin.

I watched as the beast lower itself to the ground as it continued to growl. By the sound it was making and it's stance, I knew it was going to attack. Jessica had a look on her face that I know Tammy would have gotten a kick of if she could see it; absolute horror. I knew I had to do something; as much as I didn't like Jessica, I don't like seeing people get hurt.

"Tammy!" I hissed; at that moment the wolf's head whipped around at me, it's yellow eyes shining so bright with fury. I caught my breathe and recomposed myself. "Stop that growling now!" I ordered; this time the wolf changed. It's eyes didn't loose their brightness but they gained happiness and joy. It got to it's full height and started panting. Then it came at me, not in a bad way! It ran up to me and sat, staring at me. Sitting it was about my height and about as wide. "Good girl" I said and rubbed it's head. I watched as it sat on the my other side.

*Announcement over intercom*
That was exciting wasn't it? That concludes this session. It seems that we have our answer. The mother of the one Tara Alcott is Charlie Whales. Have a good day everyone.

I sighed out of relief and looked to my right and left, almost expecting the little girl and gigantic wolf to still be there. They were gone however and I noticed that Tammy was starting to wake up. I ran over to her and helped her stand up; there was a smile on her face.

"So I guess you weren't lying then." Was all she said before she hugged me. I glanced over at Jessica, who didn't seem please. She must have known that Tammy wasn't hers. Or maybe that's why she was so upset; she must have been so hellbent on convincing Tammy that she was her mother. I managed a weak smile at Jessica, one of which she seemed not to have seen because she just stormed out of the room.

"Sore looser huh?" I asked Tammy. She only nodded and smiled.

"You should have seen her at Monopoly. She's worse than me" Tammy replied with another wide smile.

"Well, let's get you home, my little guard dog." I winced when I felt a fist connect with my shoulder. I looked up to the see Tammy strutting in front of me. She looked back and said, "I'm no one's guard dog!'

A Dream Through Time

I remember falling asleep in the in the 21st Century; in my room, in my bed, asleep. It had been a calm night, no wind or rain or precipitation of any kind. It had been hard to fall asleep though, the silence didn't help. I used to live in a big city so a lot of noise is always much appreciated. The silence, the silence should have been a clue that something was wrong. Even in a small town like this, it's never so quiet that you can hear a pin drop from across town. But there had been no sounds that night; no birds chirping, no sound of the leaves moving in a light breeze, not even anything from my cat; he was always outside at night.

All I remember is falling asleep in the 21st Century, 2014 to be exact. Then all of a sudden I awoke to a loud crash. I jolted upright in my bed and looked around frantically for the source of the noise. My eyes were still foggy from sleep but the shock of my surroundings was enough to fully wake me up. My bed sat in a room. Stone walls surrounded me and light was coming from somewhere behind me. I whipped around to see a huge window; I swear it was as big as a door. The scenery was breath-taking! What looked like a town square sat below the window. People were milling around, laughing and interacting. I watched a young man walk across the square with a small package under his arm. I watched as he approached two very large wooden doors and knocked. It was no time at all before a young women answered and he disappeared inside.

I'd always wanted to go back to the Middle Ages; when castles where everywhere and anything could lead to an adventurous adventure; causing you to travel across the lands and fight hideous monsters (real or human).

I turned my attention to the rooms door when I heard another loud crash sounding from outside. I slowly climbed out of bed and looked around the room, this time more closely. It was beautiful. Layers of different colored drapes hung from every possible surface. The top of my bed had a canopy of them hanging from the posts. A wardrobe, I noticed, sat in the far left corner of the room. It seemed like it had never been touched. I walked over to it, keeping in mind that someone was right outside the room. Opening its doors I found clothes; men's to be specific. I smiled and then realized that I was still in my 21st Century pajamas. I needed to change.

I quickly pulled on a pair of leggings and one of those white puffy shirts that you always see men wearing in the movies. I've always wanted to wear one! I shoved on a pair of boots and was glad when they fit perfectly. Then came another crash. I was getting a little fed up with it now, it was one thing a couple of times but three loud noises within a few minutes as definitely not okay. I quickly put my hair into a tight ponytail and opened the door. I walked straight into a long hallway. It stretched on for what looked like every in both directions.

I chose to walk down the right side of the hallway; stopping every now and then to look at some tapestry, sculpture or amour. When I reached the end of the hallway I was met by a door, opening it I discovered a dining room. A hundred people must have been sitting around a massive mahogany table. I cautiously walked into the room but banged into a waiter and winced, waiting for the repercussion. Nothing happened.

I looked around and I noticed the waiter that i'd "bumped" into was serving wine to some women. I glanced down at myself, it looked like I was solid. I decided to test it out. I walked around the room trying to make as much noise as possible but no one turned around, no even flinched, not even a little bit.

It clicked, I was here but not really here. Confusing right? I walked to the head of the table where the King would normally be sitting. I stood next to him and listened to him spout stories of wars and battles and victory. Everything I loved about the Middle Ages; war,and victory.

That's when I woke up in my room. I smiled and closed my eyes again, wishing for my sub-conscious to take me back.

MPGIS Based Story

Dad was upset, I could tell. He had been quiet all during supper and I just knew that he knew about Mom's new job. I understood why she had not told him about it yet; it was working for his father at some advertisement agency and we both knew how much my dad hated his. He looked like he was about to say something so I quickly excused myself from the table and walked into the kitchen, where I could watch the scene about to play out in front of me.

"Who is he?" My father asked. To which my mom looked down and smiled. I think she thought that he was joking but by the look on his face, he was dead serious.

"What? You actually think I'm cheating on you?" She responded with a hint of distrust in her voice. I didn't blame her; my parents' marriage is solid, nothing could break it. I hoped.

"Then why did you lie yesterday? You told me you were going out with Trisha. But when I saw your phone was at home I called her to check up on you. She said you weren't with her." He breathed. I could tell he was getting frustrated and so did my mom. When she moved her hand across the table he whipped his away. "If you weren't with Trisha where were you? Hmm? Where were you?" He asked, speaking louder the second time.

"I was at work" Saison, my mom, replied calmly. "I was at work" she sighed. Standing up she smiled weakly at me and turned back the Blaine, my father. We were a really weird family. My mom claims that she is from France but everyone knows that she's really from Montreal. My dad on the other hand was far from calm.

"I thought you got fired?" My dad can be a little stupid sometimes so I wouldn't put it past him if my mom had to explain it to him in black and white.

"I got a new job Blaine. I'm working for your father" she said in a whisper. I knew she didn't want to tell him this; we both knew it could be the one thing that could ruin their marriage.

"My father? Why? Couldn't you have found a different job!" He yelled. He doesn't yell often so when he does, you know he's mad. My mother and I both jumped back a little.

"He offered it and it's good money. I figured it would be, how do you say, fine." There she goes. My mom has a tendency to say "how do you say" and then say the word she needs to say. It's a little frustrating sometimes.

"I see" Was all my dad said before he walked towards the door and left, leaving my mom and me alone in the house. He came back the next morning and said that he'd thought about it and agreed it was worth it, after all, we needed the money.
